Mátyás Tóth is a Hungarian puppeteer and interdisciplinary artist working internationally, including in Japan, Taiwan, Germany, and the US. He earned his Master’s degree in puppetry in Budapest and has received multiple awards and international fellowships.
With extensive experience as a performer in both the theatre and film industries, Mátyás has also dedicated years to leading participatory theatre (Theatre in Education) for underprivileged children and teenagers across Hungary. Additionally, he develops socially engaged theatre projects for hearing-impaired children.
His recent work is research- and workshop-based, created in direct collaboration with local communities, combining puppetry, installation, and performance to examine radicalization and polarization in contemporary social contexts. Through material exploration, he aims to research how urgent social and political issues can be articulated through specific material processes.
During his residency at Rote Fabrik, Mátyás will explore digital and analog manipulation in autocratic contexts. He researches how the digital realm influences our perception of reality. Inspired by recent political shifts in Hungary, he examines how to hack and rewrite propaganda and AI-driven manipulation. Using performative methods like workshops, performance, and video, his project at Rote Fabrik aims not just to raise awareness, but to protect the autonomy of our shared reality.
