Skien is the birthplace of the world-renowned playwright Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906). In the anniversary year 2028, the new Ibsen library opens in the city, with an integrated Sølvåren, Ibsen dissemination center, and citizen service, and which is next door to the cultural center Ibsenhuset. The Ibsen Library has ambitions to contribute to the maintenance and development of democracy as an arena of inclusion, openness, and integration of art as a resource in society.
The architects behind the new Ibsen Library “Tree Crown” (“Trekrone”) are Kengo Kuma and Associates in collaboration with Mad Arkitekter. The library’s design is intended to preserve and celebrate its parkland setting while maximising its potential as a public space. The building’s curved shape will be formed around the existing trees, while a new outdoor amphitheater and multiple access points will connect the building with the park. The design is an interpretation of Ibsen’s literature and the Sølvåren, Ibsen dissemination center, will be integrated into the building with several experience points. The design utilises a natural material palette dominated by tactile, warm wood. Large areas of glazing will create the feeling of «seamless» outdoor and indoor space.
Integrated in the Ibsen Library will be new permanent works of art by living contemporary artists working with sculpture and material-based art. Professional artists are invited to submit relevant portfolio via e-mail (max 5 MB), CV and a short motivation for the commission. Please note: zipped files will not be opened. The Open Call speaks out to artists open for collaboration and a dialogue-based process. The selection committee consists of representatives from the architects, the municipality, the library and the Norwegian curators Eirin Støen and Helga-Marie Nordby. Total budget: two million NOK. Send your application to e-mail skien.postmottak@skien.kommune.no by October 15, 2024.
